K1 Admissions

Starting Kindergarten at School of the Nations

For children born in 2024, the first year of kindergarten at SON introduces children to learning alongside peers in an English–Mandarin bilingual environment through play and hands-on activities. Teachers and families work together as children settle into routines and build early learning habits. Request a tour to see the kindergarten and talk with an educator about your child’s first steps. We’d love to meet your family.

Why families choose SON for K1

Learning through play & practical work

Stories, art, gardening, hands-on mathematics and indoor and outdoor play all have a place in K1. Children also eat lunch with their teachers and have a midday nap. The schedule below shows how the day fits together.

Up to 16 children in a K1 class

For 2027–28, SON plans three K1 classes of up to 16 children, each with a homeroom teacher, a Mandarin teacher and a teaching assistant.

English and Mandarin in everyday life

Around 70% of the K1 school day is in English and 30% in Mandarin. Children enter with different experience in both languages and teachers bring them up to our high standards. No set level of English or Mandarin is required to apply.

International education rooted in Macau

Founded by Macau residents in 1988, SON offers local families an education with an international outlook. Our aim is for children to engage with perspectives from around the world while staying connected to the people and community of Macau.

Science, maths and character together

SON’s Hidden Gems programme, developed by the Badi Foundation and taught at the school for more than 20 years, brings science, mathematics and qualities such as truthfulness and cooperation into K1. It reflects the school’s aim to develop children’s intellect and character together.

A path from K1 through Form 6

Choosing SON for K1 gives your child the chance to grow within one school through primary and secondary to Form 6. Across those years, SON brings academic learning and character development together. In the upper years, students work towards IGCSE qualifications and the IB Diploma.

A day in K1

From 8:30am to 2:40pm, K1 children move between learning activities and play, with time indoors and outdoors. Lunch with teachers is followed by a one-hour nap.

Questions parents ask

No set level is required. Teachers support children with different home languages as they learn English and Mandarin.

We plan three classes of up to 16 children. We welcome applications and consider each child individually, but cannot guarantee a place.

The interview takes about 50 minutes and includes group activities with one parent and a brief conversation. There is no need to practise beforehand; just help your child arrive rested and ready to join in.

Yes. Register with several schools; if offered places, choose one through Macao One Account in April.

If a place opens after April confirmation, we contact families on the waiting list.

At SON, it means developing character alongside knowledge. In K1, children practise qualities such as truthfulness, cooperation and care for others through our Hidden Gems programme and everyday classroom life.
