Character Development Program
The School of the Nations perceives the purpose of education as both, the realization of individual potential and the transformation of society. We would like to provide an opportunity for the students to acquire new attitudes, principles and understandings that will prepare them to participate in solving the problems that afflict society today.
Of particular concern is to develop the desire and habit of extending themselves beyond their own personal concerns and becoming involved with the needs and problems others face on a daily basis. This attitude of service is not only essential for the development of the individual's potential but is, at the same time, an essential force required for the betterment of society.
The Character Development project began with a discussion among some of the teachers regarding how to foster a spirit of service in the youth of the school. Ideas and experiences from different areas and regions were discussed. It seemed that the best method to strengthen a spirit of service was to involve the youth in service from the beginning and then guide them in reflecting on their actions.
Of course throughout the years in which the program was defined, organized and systematized,
many teachers participated. But the teachers by themselves could not have achieved this. The contribution of the students was an especially important part. Their reflections on the various experiences, the good will with which they approached the various tasks and the suggestions they had for improvement was the guarantee for success.
With this strong emphasis on developing a spirit of social service and cooperation, the School of the Nations is constantly seeking out opportunities and experiences where the students can give of themselves for the benefit of others. At the the moment the opportunities, incorporated into the regular schedule include:
- Developing the capability of being a caring and responsible family member.
- Developing the capability to build unity in diversity.
- Developing the capability to encourage others and bring joy to their hearts.
- Operation and management of a Peer Tutoring Center for lower primary students.
- Working in government sponsored nurseries, servicing the needs of working mothers.
- Raising awareness of environmental concerns.
- Assisting in the maintenance of public parks and gardens.

- Public education of the social services available to Macau residents.

Throughout the year, the students have a variety of projects and assignments that are completed.
